Central African Republic

The Central African Republic is a landlocked country located in the heart of Africa. It is bordered by Chad to the north, Sudan to the northeast, South Sudan to the east, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo to the south, and Cameroon to the west. Covering an area of approximately 622,900 square kilometers, CAR lies at the transition between the Sahara, Sahel, and equatorial forest zones, giving it a varied but fragile geographical setting.
The country’s physical geography is dominated by broad plateaus, savanna grasslands, and scattered forested regions. In the north, the landscape gradually becomes drier and merges into the Sahelian zone, characterized by semi-arid conditions and sparse vegetation. The central region consists mainly of rolling savannas and low plateaus, which support both agriculture and livestock. The southern part of the country is more humid and forested, forming part of the Congo Basin rainforest system. Several important rivers, including the Ubangi, Sangha, and Chari tributaries, drain the country and provide essential water resources for agriculture and settlements.

The climate of the Central African Republic is tropical but varies from north to south. The northern regions are semi-arid with low and irregular rainfall, while the southern regions receive higher rainfall and have a more humid equatorial climate. The country generally experiences a rainy season from May to October and a dry season from November to April. Rainfall decreases significantly from south to north, strongly influencing vegetation patterns and agricultural potential.

Agriculture is the backbone of the Central African Republic’s economy and the main source of livelihood for the majority of the population. The sector is largely subsistence-based, with smallholder farmers relying on traditional tools and rain-fed cultivation. Despite the country’s vast fertile land and favorable conditions in some regions, agricultural productivity remains low due to limited infrastructure, conflict, and underinvestment.

The main food crops grown in CAR include cassava, maize, millet, sorghum, yams, peanuts, and rice. Cassava is the most important staple food and is widely cultivated across both savanna and forest zones due to its resilience. Millet and sorghum are more common in the drier northern regions, while maize is grown in the central and southern areas where rainfall is more reliable. Rice cultivation occurs in lowland and river valley areas.

Cash crops are an important but underdeveloped part of the agricultural sector. Historically, cotton, coffee, and tobacco have been significant export crops. Cotton production is concentrated in the northern savanna regions, while coffee is grown mainly in the southern forest zones. However, production levels have fluctuated due to political instability and lack of investment in processing and transport infrastructure.

Livestock farming is more common in the northern and central regions, where savanna landscapes are suitable for grazing. Cattle, goats, sheep, and poultry are widely raised, although livestock production is often constrained by animal diseases, limited veterinary services, and seasonal water shortages. Transhumance, or seasonal movement of livestock in search of pasture and water, is a common practice.

Despite its agricultural potential, the Central African Republic faces severe challenges. These include ongoing political instability, weak infrastructure, limited access to markets, soil degradation, deforestation in some areas, and climate variability. These constraints have significantly reduced agricultural productivity and contributed to food insecurity in many regions.

Efforts to improve agriculture focus on restoring rural infrastructure, supporting smallholder farmers, improving seed distribution, promoting sustainable farming techniques, and strengthening food security programs. International organizations play a major role in supporting agricultural development and humanitarian assistance in the country.
The relationship between geography and agriculture in the Central African Republic is strongly influenced by its position between savanna and rainforest zones. Climatic variation from north to south determines the distribution of crops and livestock systems, while environmental constraints and instability limit agricultural expansion. Geography therefore remains a key factor shaping agricultural patterns, livelihoods, and development prospects in CAR.
