Monaco

Monaco is a small independent city-state located on the French Riviera in Western Europe. It is bordered by France on three sides and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. Covering an area of only about 2 square kilometres, Monaco is the second-smallest independent country in the world after Vatican City. The capital is officially Monaco, although the country is often divided into districts, including Monte Carlo, which is internationally famous for its luxury casinos, hotels, and the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix. Despite its tiny size, Monaco is one of the wealthiest countries in the world and is known as an important centre for tourism, finance, and international events.

Geographically, Monaco is situated on a narrow coastal strip between the Maritime Alps and the Mediterranean Sea. Much of the country is built on steep hillsides overlooking the sea, while extensive land reclamation projects have increased its area over time. The highest natural point is Mont Agel, which reaches about 62 metres within Monaco's territory (the mountain itself rises much higher in France). Monaco has a Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. Its coastline, natural harbour, and pleasant climate have made it a popular destination for tourists and wealthy residents.

Monaco has a long history despite its small size. The area was first settled by the ancient Greeks and later became part of the Roman Empire. In 1297, François Grimaldi captured the fortress of Monaco, beginning the rule of the Grimaldi family, which continues to reign today. Throughout the centuries, Monaco maintained its independence through alliances with larger neighbouring powers, particularly France. In the 19th century, the development of the Monte Carlo Casino transformed Monaco into a world-famous resort, attracting visitors from across Europe and significantly strengthening its economy.

During the 20th century, Monaco developed into an international financial centre and tourist destination. Prince Rainier III, who ruled from 1949 to 2005, modernized the country and gained worldwide attention through his marriage to American actress Grace Kelly. Today, Monaco is a constitutional monarchy headed by Prince Albert II. Although it is not a member of the European Union, Monaco maintains close economic relations with France and uses the euro as its currency through an agreement with the EU.

Agriculture is virtually nonexistent in Monaco because of its extremely limited land area and dense urban development. There is no significant farmland, and almost all food consumed in the country is imported from neighbouring France and other countries. Small ornamental gardens and parks contribute to the city's green spaces but do not support commercial agricultural production.

Fishery has only minor economic importance. Small-scale fishing takes place in the Mediterranean Sea, mainly supplying local restaurants with fresh seafood. Common catches include sea bass, sea bream, sardines, anchovies, and shellfish. Commercial fishing is limited by Monaco's small coastline and harbour facilities. Marine conservation and sustainable management of coastal ecosystems are important priorities to protect biodiversity in the surrounding Mediterranean waters.

Forestry does not exist as an economic sector in Monaco because the country has no natural forests. However, Monaco places considerable emphasis on urban green spaces, botanical gardens, and environmental sustainability. Public parks such as the Exotic Garden and Princess Grace Rose Garden provide valuable recreational areas and contribute to biodiversity within the urban environment.

Overall, Monaco is a unique microstate whose economy depends almost entirely on tourism, financial services, luxury real estate, and international events rather than natural resources. Its spectacular Mediterranean location, centuries-old monarchy, and global reputation for wealth and prestige have made Monaco one of the world's most distinctive and prosperous countries.
