Israel is a country located on the eastern Mediterranean margin of the Middle East, characterized by marked physiographic and climatic heterogeneity despite its relatively small territorial extent. Its geography extends from the coastal plain along the Mediterranean Sea in the west to the Jordan Rift Valley in the east and the arid Negev Desert in the south. This spatial arrangement produces a strong environmental gradient, ranging from humid Mediterranean ecosystems in the north and central regions to hyper-arid desert conditions in the south. The topography is structurally controlled by tectonic processes associated with the Dead Sea Transform fault system, which forms part of the larger Great Rift Valley. The lowest terrestrial point on Earth is located in this system at the Dead Sea, approximately 430 meters below sea level.
The country’s climate is predominantly Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters in the northern and coastal regions. Precipitation decreases sharply from north to south and from west to east, resulting in semi-arid and arid conditions that dominate large portions of the territory. This climatic variability, combined with limited freshwater availability, has strongly influenced both natural ecosystems and human land use patterns. Vegetation in the Mediterranean zone is characterized by sclerophyllous shrubland and open woodlands dominated by species such as Quercus (oak), Pistacia (pistachio), and Pinus (pine), while desert regions support sparse xerophytic vegetation adapted to extreme water stress.
Israel possesses a complex and multilayered historical trajectory shaped by its position at the crossroads of Africa, Asia, and Europe. Archaeological evidence indicates continuous human settlement dating back to prehistoric periods. During the Bronze and Iron Ages, the region was inhabited by Canaanite populations and later by the Israelite and Judahite kingdoms. Subsequently, the area came under successive imperial dominations, including Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Islamic, Crusader, Mamluk, and Ottoman rule. The region holds profound religious and cultural significance for Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, particularly concentrated in cities such as Jerusalem, which has served as a focal point of political and spiritual importance for millennia. Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after the First World War, the territory was administered under the British Mandate of Palestine until the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, an event that initiated significant demographic, political, and territorial transformations that continue to shape regional dynamics.
Agriculture in Israel represents a technologically advanced and highly intensive system developed in response to inherent environmental constraints, particularly water scarcity and limited arable land. Agricultural activity is concentrated in regions with relatively favorable soil and climatic conditions, including the coastal plain, the Galilee, the Jezreel Valley, and irrigated areas in the Jordan Valley and Negev Desert. The sector is characterized by high productivity per unit area, achieved through the integration of precision irrigation technologies, particularly drip irrigation, greenhouse cultivation, and advanced agronomic practices.
Crop production includes a diverse range of high-value horticultural and field crops. Citrus fruits, avocados, grapes, olives, dates, pomegranates, and bananas constitute major fruit commodities, while vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and potatoes are widely cultivated under both open-field and controlled-environment conditions. Date palm cultivation is particularly significant in arid regions, where saline and water-limited soils are prevalent. Livestock production, especially dairy cattle, poultry, sheep, and goats, is highly mechanized and benefits from genetic improvement and optimized feeding systems, resulting in high yields relative to global standards.
Fisheries in Israel are comparatively limited in scale but include both marine capture fisheries and increasingly important aquaculture systems. Marine fishing activities are conducted primarily along the Mediterranean coastline and in the Gulf of Aqaba (Eilat), targeting species such as sardines, mullet, sea bream, and mackerel. However, overfishing pressures, coastal habitat degradation, and environmental regulation have constrained the expansion of wild capture fisheries. Consequently, aquaculture has developed as a major component of the sector, utilizing ponds, reservoirs, and recirculating systems to cultivate species such as tilapia, carp, and marine fish species. This shift reflects broader global trends toward controlled-environment food production systems in response to ecological constraints.
Forestry in Israel is largely the result of extensive afforestation and ecological restoration initiatives undertaken throughout the twentieth century to stabilize soils, reduce desertification, and enhance ecosystem services. Natural Mediterranean woodlands are concentrated in upland regions such as the Galilee, Carmel, and Judean Hills, where species composition includes oaks, pines, carob trees, and pistachios. In addition to natural vegetation, large-scale planted forests have been established, particularly in semi-arid regions such as the Negev. These forests serve multiple functions, including carbon sequestration, soil conservation, watershed regulation, and recreational use. Nevertheless, forest ecosystems remain vulnerable to disturbances such as wildfires, prolonged drought events, pest outbreaks, and the impacts of climate variability.
In synthesis, Israel’s environmental and socio-economic systems are strongly shaped by climatic aridity, limited water resources, and topographic diversity. These constraints have driven the development of highly adaptive agricultural technologies, specialized fisheries systems, and managed forestry landscapes. The interaction between natural conditions and human innovation has produced a highly productive but resource-dependent system that continues to evolve under conditions of environmental stress and regional complexity.
In 2007 Gerold, Klaudia, Ayla and Kim as well as 9 other students and two other adults on a city twinning trip to Beer Yaakov (twin city of Bad Oldesloe). A total of 10 days in Israel, seen a lot (Nazareth, Golan Heights, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Masada, Dead Sea etc.). Gerold and Klaudia were on a sheep and goat farm (1000 milking) of two old people who survived from Auschwitz and Buchenwald. Were also in the Holocaust Museum Yad Vashem, which touched us deeply. In 2010 Gerold was in Tel Aviv for 2 days, where he had a meeting with the National Agricultural Research and Newcastle University about an EU project application. In 2011 Gerold was in Ramallah and Jericho in the Palestinian area as speaker at the Alumni Event of the DAAD and a workshop of the BMBF and liaison office for sustainable land use. I
