Sao Tome and Principe

São Tomé and Príncipe is a small island nation located in the Gulf of Guinea off the western equatorial coast of Central Africa. The country consists of two main volcanic islands, São Tomé and Príncipe, along with several smaller islets. With a total land area of around 1,000 square kilometers, it is one of Africa’s smallest states. The islands are mountainous and heavily forested, with fertile volcanic soils and a humid tropical climate marked by high rainfall and warm temperatures throughout the year. Dense rainforests and steep terrain dominate much of the interior landscape, while settlements and plantations are concentrated along the coasts.

Agriculture has long been the backbone of the economy. During the colonial period, São Tomé and Príncipe became one of the world’s leading cocoa producers, and cocoa remains the country’s most important export crop today. Coffee, coconuts, bananas, palm products, and tropical fruits are also cultivated. Most agricultural production takes place on small farms, although remnants of former plantation systems still exist. Fishing is another important activity for coastal communities. The country faces challenges such as limited arable land, dependence on a narrow range of exports, and vulnerability to global market fluctuations. Sustainable agriculture and ecotourism are increasingly viewed as important opportunities for economic development.
